Caution! Rookie on Board.

Driving is more than an artform...

You can always tell a character from his car, the way he drives, and the words that emerge from his mouth behind the wheel. Trust me; it's easy to fill in the blanks:

1. A pastel pink convertible with the top down in the scorching hot mid-day sun, signaling left when meaning to turn right, and signaling right when meaning to turn left. [The well-endowed _______ ]

2. An unscratched, spotlessly clean 1992 sedan, consistently driving 10 miles below the speed limit, and stopping at stop signs to look left and right and left and right and left again at every completely deserted intersection before moving on. [The goody _______'s boy]

3. A zooming-so-fast-you-can't-tell-what car, cutting in and out of lanes, punctuating every "Get out of my way!" with honks and profanity. [The total _______ ]

The road can be such a colourful canvas full of sights, sounds and surprises. Good thing for us, here in Hawaii, everyone supposedly drives with the *Aloha Spirit, where courtesy is the way of life, everyone gives way to everyone else, and your honk is only used as friendly beeps of 'Hello'. What never fails to tickle John and I is the Hawaiian-styled appreciation wave (what we privately label as the cow's horns). The Hawaiian drivers thank one another on the roads by showing their fists with the thumb and pinkie sticking out. We're seen several different style of the wave - simply raising the 'horns' where the other party may see it, rotating it repeatedly, sharply jabbing it out of the window, and our favourite, twitching the thumb and finger concurrently (as if one's scratching inside an ear).

John's working at getting his driver's license and I'm his drive instructor! But as you might have guessed, he's already a pretty good driver. In fact, he's a much safer and more patient driver than I am. Don't be fooled by that dorky look in the photo; that was just goofy him posing for the camera! We'll both be taking the road test for the local driver's license in a couple of weeks' time. May we remember to put on that Aloha Spirit, say a prayer to the Holy Spirit, keep our fingers crossed and those horns twitching!
